Defence of suspects

From the first police interview to the hearing: representation at every stage of the criminal process

In no area of law is so much at stake as in criminal law. If you are suspected of a criminal offence, you are up against the Public Prosecution Service and the full investigative machinery of the state. The power of the state can reach deep into your life. That affects you not only in legal terms but almost always personally as well: your liberty, your work, your reputation and your relationships can all come under pressure. It is therefore of great importance that you are represented as soon as possible by a committed and expert criminal defence lawyer. Our lawyers know better than anyone that acting quickly and decisively can make the difference.

Our firm

The client comes first with us. We handle every case file with the greatest possible care and look actively for creative solutions and strong arguments to bring your case to the best possible conclusion. We work realistically, transparently and with integrity. We determine the strategy in your case together with you. We are honest about what is possible, and just as honest about what is not. Because we communicate clearly and in good time, you always know where you stand.

A lawyer at every stage of the criminal process

We represent suspects at every stage of the criminal process. Have you been arrested, have you received an invitation to an interview at the police station, or must you appear before the court shortly? Then you can count on us. We also advise you when you have not yet officially been named as a suspect but do expect that this is going to happen. Good preparation makes a great deal of difference precisely at that early stage.

In criminal law the state has far-reaching powers. That does not mean you are powerless. As a suspect you have rights that protect your position, and it is important that you know them from the very first moment. You have the right to remain silent, the right to a lawyer before and during the police interview, and the right to a fair trial. Our lawyers guide you throughout the criminal process and see to it that your rights are respected.

Good representation asks for more than being present at an interview or a hearing. We think ahead and prepare you for every possible scenario. We analyse the case file thoroughly and with a critical eye. Is the investigation complete, or is something missing? Have the proper procedures been followed and was the evidence lawfully obtained? Have witnesses been carefully questioned, and does their statement call for closer examination? Is an expert report needed, or rather a counter-investigation? Those are some of the questions we ask in order to achieve the best possible outcome in your case.

We do not wait until the hearing to ask them. The sooner we are involved, the more we can still influence: an investigation that is still running can be supplemented, a mistaken impression can be corrected, and pre-trial detention can sometimes be shortened or avoided altogether. We keep you informed of every development in your file along the way, so that you do not have to wait and see what becomes of your case.

Sometimes it is wise to cooperate actively with the investigation, and sometimes it is not. In one case we will aim for acquittal, while in another a reduction of sentence is the best outcome. We discuss those possibilities with you openly and honestly, so that you can make well-considered choices.

Types of criminal case

You can come to us for every kind of criminal case. We provide representation in general criminal cases, in financial and economic crime cases and in confiscation proceedings. No case is too large or too small for us. Whether you are suspected of a minor offence or of several complex crimes, you have come to the right place. Our office is in Amsterdam, but we represent suspects throughout the Netherlands: at the district courts, the courts of appeal and the Supreme Court.
